Addressing the impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic

The Sikhaba iCovid-19 campaign is a collaborative venture between the National Department of Health, SABC Education, Innovation Edge, the DG Murray Trust and Ilifa Labantwana. This initiative aims to provide COVID19 -related information to all people in South Africa in a format that is easily understandable, engaging and trusted. This daily COVID19 radio programme was delivered in all official SA languages across fifteen SABC radio stations. The shows were sponsored by the Solidarity Fund, ELMA Philanthropies and Millennium Trust.

Solidarity Fund

The Solidarity Fund was designed as a rapid response vehicle to mobilise South-Africa in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting health, humanitarian and social consequences. The Solidarity Fund has received R3.22bn of which R2.75bn was allocated to fund initiatives aimed at assisting those affected by the pandemic. The Solidarity Fund is committed to transparency around all activities.

South African Future Trust Employer Relief Fund

The SA Futures Trust has committed R1.04bn to support supporting 9 656 SMME’s and 92 993 employees. The SAFT COVID19 relief fund has been fully subscribed and the applications have closed.

Sukuma Relief Programme

The Sukuma Fund was established within days of lockdown with an initial R1bn donation from the Rupert Family and Remgro Limited. Since then, thanks to further charitable donations, the fund has grown significantly. The goal is to rescue and revive thousands of small businesses across the country – preserving jobs and supporting the people who depend on them. This is a long-term project, and the Fund intends to become a permanent relief fund for small businesses, able to assist South African small businesses in future crises. However, due to high demand, all applications are currently suspended.
