Corruption Watch

The main objectives of Corruption Watch are to encourage and enable active public participation in combatting corruption by reporting experiences of corruption on a confidential basis on multiple reporting channels (‘whistle blowing’); to analyse the received information to identify patterns of corruption in respect of particular activities, government departments, geographical areas, economic sectors, organisations and related factors; and to run focused campaigns, through cooperation with other organisations, directed at exposing and combatting corruption in targeted areas or communities (‘hot spots’).

Institute for Security Studies (ISS)

ISS partners with governments and other civil society organisations to build knowledge and skills to enhance human security and achieve sustainable peace and prosperity in Africa. In South Africa they have been undertaking detailed research and analysis on understanding how to reduce violence, crime and corruption and improving the criminal justice system since 1996. The core work of the Justice and Violence Prevention Programme focusses on (a) promoting police professionalism and accountability and (b) enhancing an understanding of violence and violence prevention.

New South Institute

NSI’s purpose is to provide evidence-based policy and applied research on complex problems of government in delicate democracies. NSI will judge their success on whether their insights and recommendations lead to actions by government to improve performance of state institutions and the other cornerstone institutions of democracy.

OUTA WaterCan Project

Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse WaterCAN (Water Community Action Network) program is to have South Africa’s water management, planning and quality issues addressed by the relevant authorities, through the responsible and constructive use of accurate information, and enabling citizens to drive the process.

Parliamentary Monitoring NPC

Parliamentary Monitoring NPC (PMG) aims to provide accurate, objective and current information on all Parliamentary Committee proceedings in the form of detailed, unofficial minutes and documents and since 2007, sound recordings of the meeting. PMG’s key activity is the attending of all Parliamentary Committee meetings, where a monitor will tape and minute the proceedings and obtain all documents tabled in the committees.

Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI)

PARI aims to contribute towards a more effective and accountable state through research and advocacy work. They focus on programmes of research: Local Governance, State Reform, Local Government, Energy and Society, Organisational and Institutional Studies. Regarding State Reform, PARI’s proposals focus on (a) professionalising appointments in the public administration and criminal justice system and developing greater checks and balances in recruitment and appointment regimes to reduce the undue influence of politics on the administration, and (b) reforming public procurement.

The Whistleblower House NPC

The Whistleblower House NPC facilitates access to support services for whistle-blowers, creates awareness of whistle-blowers’ plight, and acknowledges the vital role of whistle-blowers in strengthening ethics and democracy in South Africa.

Unite Behind

UniteBehind is a civil society organisation mobilising for a just and equal South Africa where everyone shares in the country’s wealth. UniteBehind’s campaigns focus on fixing the state. They aim to end state capture and improve governance, particularly involving SOEs affecting the poor and working class the most: PRASA and Eskom. They mobilise, motivate, and litigate to combat corruption, solve the electricity crisis and #FixOurTrains.
